| Info | Missourians have a great opportunity this year to elect a Professional and Award-Winning Auditor as their next State Auditor. Sandra Thomas is a hard-working, nose to the grindstone Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and County Auditor from Platte County. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from William Jewell College and a Master of Science in Accounting from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Sandra Thomas is a Proven Winner. She was first elected in 1994 when she defeated the incumbent county auditor, a do-nothing democrat, who left the office in shambles. She was subsequently unopposed in her reelection efforts. During the 2006 Republican Primary, Sandra won a stunning victory after being outspent almost six to one. She maximized the efficiency of limited campaign resources, honed her message, and won a five-way race against tough, seasoned campaign veterans.
In 1994, Thomas’ campaign platform for County Auditor was “The only accountant running for auditor.” She promised to bring the financial statements of the County into compliance and always provide a balanced budget. Thomas became the youngest County Auditor in the state.
Sandra kept her promise. In fact, she not only brought Platte County into compliance with accounting principles, but also was rewarded for it by winning national awards from the Government Finance Officers Association for nine consecutive years. Additionally, in 2003, she was named the “Outstanding CPA in Government” by her peers in the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA). This award is bestowed on only one person every two years.
Sandra is a social and fiscal conservative. She is 100% Pro-Life and 100% Pro-Second Amendment. She is dedicated to keeping taxes low and maintaining a smaller, more efficient State Government. Protecting taxpayer dollars and reminding bureaucrats that tax dollars belong to the people are Missouri Values that Sandra will fight for. As the next State Auditor, she will focus on Restoring Professionalism to that office. Under Thomas’ watch, the Auditor’s office will implement a four year audit plan that will focus on areas of risk. Areas of government, where the most money is spent, such as Education, Conservation, MoDot, and Medicaid as well as the court system, will get a lot of attention. Professionalism requires that all areas and branches of government are treated fairly and equitably no matter the political affiliation of the office holder. Thomas will ensure that audit findings are dealt with appropriately and with respect instead of with political grandstanding. In short, Sandra Thomas will return the dignity and decorum the Auditor’s office enjoyed under her friend and political role model former State Auditor Margaret Kelly. Sandra wants to put her Award-Winning record of Excellence as a Tough, Independent Auditor to work for the taxpayers of Missouri.
Thomas and her husband, James, have been married 20 years. They have two children, Shannon, 9 and Anne, 6, who attend a small Christian school in Platte County. Sandra Thomas and her family are active members of Christ Lutheran Church.
The Thomas family has owned the family farm north of Smithville, Missouri, since 1832.
