Info | Gary Burrill has served as United Church minister in Upper Musquodoboit since 1992.
Gary was born in Woodstock, New Brunswick, in 1955. Before entering the ministry, he helped found and then edited New Maritimes, a regional magazine of politics and culture, and lectured in Atlantic Canada studies and Maritime social history. He is the author of numerous articles and essays on Maritimes issues and of the book Away: Maritimers in Massachusetts, Ontario and Alberta – An Oral History of Leaving Home.
Gary is a long-time advocate for income equality, speaking out on the inadequacy of income for increasing numbers of people, and the widening gap of opportunity and income between the very wealthy and those of less than average means.
Gary is a member of Parents for Upper Musquodoboit Elementary, which earlier this year successfully opposed the planned closure of that community’s elementary school. In 1994, he helped found Arimathea Funeral Cooperative in Upper Musquodoboit, the first co-op funeral home in the province. He has coached with the Upper Valley Ball Association since 1994, and helped organize the construction in 2000 of an immense wooden playground on the Upper Musquodoboit church grounds.
Gary holds a Master of Divinity degree from Harvard University and B.A. and M.A. degrees in sociology from Queen’s University. He and Debbie, his wife, have four children.
