InfoJames H. McFerrin is, above all, a testament to what can be achieved through hard work and persistence. He has weathered hard family times and other obstacles to become one of Alabama’s most respected civil attorneys, one who has helped shape civil law in the state.

Jim was born on July 26, 1960 in Mobile, Alabama, and grew up in Huntsville. His mother was a teacher and his father a real-estate developer, and he had what he describes as a “typical middle-class upbringing” before his family suffered some hard financial times while he was a teenager. When it became clear that his schooling would be his own responsibility, Jim saved up enough money to go to Auburn University for one year, then transferred to the University of Alabama at Birmingham after earning several grants and scholarships. Jim worked for the entirety of his college career, including his time at the Cumberland School of Law – sometimes working as many as three part-time jobs at once.

Jim graduated from law school in 1987 after serving as the research editor of the Cumberland Law Review and receiving an American Jurisprudence Award or high score in Constitutional Law, Evidence, and Torts. From law school he passed the bar exam and went straight into practice, handling all aspects of civil litigation in state and federal courts. His primary focus is work-related injuries, safety issues, and discrimination claims, but he has served as lead or co-counsel on behalf of individuals, businesses, and third-party payers in multiple cases across the United States involving consumer, antitrust, and healthcare issues. He was actively involved in the creation and enactment of multiple statutes concerning employment matters, insurance, and health care, including the 1992 revision of Alabama’s worker’s compensation act.

Currently practicing in Homewood, Jim is a member of the Alabama and Birmingham bar associations and is featured in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in American Law. Outside the courtroom, he has served as a mediator for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and gives continuing-education lectures to lawyers, claims adjusters, and businesspeople on topics such as employment law and appellate practice.

Jim is married to the former Suzanne Martina and attends St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Hoover, Alabama.
