InfoJulie O'Brien was elected to the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders in 2006 and chosen by her colleagues to serve as Freeholder Vice-Chairwoman in 2009. She has been a Bergen County resident since 1968. Julie attended Lesley College in Cambridge MA and is a graduate of Ramapo College of NJ in Mahwah NJ with a degree in marketing. A tireless volunteer, parent and public servant, Julie has always put the needs of others before her own.

O'Brien became active in her home community of Ramsey as a teenager when she and two friends circulated a petition to save the front lawn of Ramsey High School from being paved over for a parking lot. The lawn, a centerpiece of town life remains an open space nearly 35 years later. After raising 4 children of her own, Julie chose to run for Ramsey Borough Council. She was elected and served one term from 2003-2006. Shortly thereafter, she ran successfully for Bergen County Freeholder, and was elected in 2006.

As a Freeholder Julie is chair of the Parks Committee and the Cultural & Historic Affairs Sub-Committee, as well as liaison to the Bergen County Environmental Council and Utilities Authorities. Passionate about open space and a better Bergen County to leave to future generations, Vice-Chairwoman O'Brien has worked on several 'green' initiatives including the purchase of Hybrid vehicles, increasing the use of solar energy at County facilities and producing alternative fuel sources. Additionally, clean water is also a priority of hers--especially embracing the Hackensack River as a vibrant nature preserve, recreation destination and valuable teaching tool.

O'Brien serves on the board of the Bergen County Community Action Partnership: the designated anti-poverty agency in Bergen County. Having been a founding member of Ramsey Responds Inc. (a non-profit aid organization that helps community members in need of temporary or ongoing assistance with food, clothing, shelter, bill paying and a variety of other needs) Julie is proud to continue her work helping our neediest residents. Making sure that all residents of Bergen County have the best quality of life remains a main concern for O'Brien.

In 2008, Freeholder O'Brien took on the challenge of promoting the excellent county schools that serve the residents of Bergen. She has made it a point to showcase the Bergen County Technical Schools (BCTS) and the Bergen County Special Services (BCSS). With the increased need for special services by so many Bergen County families, having current and accurate information readily available to families in their local districts can make an enormous difference to parents trying to navigate a complex system. The staff of the thirty-two BCSS programs act as a tremendous resource to the families of the 850 students enrolled in the district. In addition, the three high schools of the Bergen County Technical School District--Bergen Tech. Paramus, Bergen Tech. Teterboro and the Bergen County Academies--are hidden jewels that more parents should be aware of. As a parent, Julie would like every high school student to have the educational opportunity enjoyed by the students in these exceptional schools.

Julie currently resides in Ramsey with her family where she volunteers as a religious education teacher.
