Info a Delegate, a Representative and a Senator from New Jersey; born in New Brunswick, N.J., February 12, 1756; attended the common schools; graduated from Rutgers College, New Brunswick, N.J., 1775; engaged in mercantile pursuits; served in the Revolutionary Army; member, State general assembly 1783-1785, 1788; delegate to the Provincial Congress of New Jersey in 1786; Member of the Continental Congress in 1786 and 1787; elected to the First Congress (March 4, 1789-March 3, 1791); president of New Brunswick in 1792; elected to the Fifth Congress (March 4, 1797-March 3, 1799); elected to the United States Senate as a Federalist on February 14, 1799, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John Rutherfurd, but did not qualify until later, preferring to serve out his term in the House; served as Senator from March 4, 1799, to February 16, 1801, when he resigned; mayor of New Brunswick 1801-1813; member of the State council 1808-1810; elected to the Thirteenth Congress (March 4, 1813-March 3, 1815); was not a candidate for renomination in 1814; again elected mayor and served from 1821 until his death in New Brunswick, January 22, 1824; interment in First Reformed Church Cemet
