InfoBAYLIES, William, (brother of Francis Baylies), a Representative from Massachusetts; born in Dighton, Mass., September 15, 1776; was graduated from Brown University, Providence, R.I., in 1795; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Bridgewater (west parish) in 1799; member of the State house of representatives in 1808, 1809, 1812, and 1813; served in the State senate in 1825 and 1826; presented credentials as a Federalist to the Eleventh Congress and served from March 4, 1809, until June 28, 1809, when he was succeeded by Charles Turner, Jr., who contested the election; elected as a Federalist to the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Congresses (March 4, 1813-March 3, 1817); again a member of the State house of representatives in 1820 and 1821; again served in the State senate in 1830 and 1831; elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-third Congress (March 4, 1833-March 3, 1835); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1834 to the Twenty-fourth Congress; resumed the practice of his profession; died in Taunton, Bristol County, Mass., on September 27, 1865; interment in the Old Cemetery, Dighton, Mass.
