Info | Born and raised in Kingston, Pennsylvania, Jim Haggerty had early life lessons in the rewards of hard work and persistence.
As a teenager, Haggerty gained an appreciation for hard work and less-than glamorous service while working at his family's small restaurant. He attended Wyoming Valley West High School and graduated first in his class, earning himself admission into the world renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduating from M.I.T. where he earned a B.S. in management science, concentrating in operations research and statistics, Haggerty earned a JD degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC.
Upon graduation from law school, he accepted a position with McDermott, Will and Emory, a premiere law firm in Boston, where he specialized in commercial litigation. In 1994 he returned to Kingston to start a private law practice. He has been admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar, the Massachusetts Bar, and U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and the Middle District and U.S. Courts of Appeals for the 1st and 3rd Circuits of Pennsylvania.
While in the Army Reserve, Haggerty completed the U.S. Army Airborne Basic Course and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in Armor. He joined the Pennsylvania National Guard serving as a tank platoon leader in the 103rd Armored and was the first honor graduate of the Armor Office Course at Fort Knox.
Jim has a long standing, community-rooted legal career in public service, having been elected as Mayor of Kingston for three consecutive terms. In this capacity, he has balanced eight consecutive budgets, cut income tax four times and reduced the recycling fee.
His successes as Mayor also include: increasing fire protection in Kingston by centralizing operations; increasing the anti-drug operations of the police department; winning the fight against the expansion of an adult entertainment club in Common Pleas Court, State Superior Court and the Federal Court; shutting down two massage parlors; turning a blighted property into a new multi-million dollar reclamation project through the coordination of municipal, county and private funds; and working to secure $76 million of development projects with increased employment for Kingston.
Jim is active in numerous community and charitable organizations, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Hoyt Library and the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce.
Throughout his life, a constant theme is evident, Haggerty works to achieve his goals and realize his visions. His next goal is to represent you and your family in Harrisburg. By seeing what Jim has done in his past, we can imagine what he will do for our future. Jim invites you in joining him to make it happen.
