ON THE ISSUES
Closing the deficit: "I take a business approach. The business approach would be to take a look at expenses first. The way things are done in Trenton now, it's to add the money on with new taxes or new fees. That's not my idea at all."
Schools: "We're rewarding districts that are having difficulty showing they can handle money. Districts like North Arlington, Rutherford, and Lyndhurst are out there soliciting funding through partnerships and individual donations. Instead of a reward coming to them for their efforts, their state aid is reduced. That's a disincentive to work hard."
Sprawl: "The issue I have here is with congestion that has potential with two projects proposed in the Meadowlands-Xanadu and the EnCap golf project. We're going to cap the landfills, which needed to be capped years ago. But how are we going to deal with the children coming into the area from the golf project, which includes residential development? What about Xanadu? This is a disaster unless you have a mass transit program - not one proposed for the future but one that's part of the agreement."
