InfoCongressman Shaw, the third most senior Republican on the Committee on Ways and Means, serves as the chairman of the Social Security Subcommittee. As chairman, he will be spearheading efforts to save Social Security. From 1995-1998 he served as chairman of the Human Resources Subcommittee where he was credited with authoring the welfare reform legislation. He is also a member of the Trade Subcommittee.

Prior to taking his seat on the Ways and Means Committee in 1988, Congressman Shaw served on four committees: Judiciary; Public Works and Transportation; Select Committee on Narcotics Abuse and Control; and Merchant Marines and Fisheries.

Congressman Clay Shaw has represented a South Florida Congressional District since 1981. He has been Chairman of the Florida Delegation since early 1996.

Prior to coming to Capitol Hill, Congressman Shaw served the residents of Fort Lauderdale as their Mayor for three terms (1975-80) and as Vice Mayor (1973-75). He also served as a City Commissioner, Associate Municipal Judge, Chief City Prosecutor, and Assistant City Attorney. He is a member of the Florida Bar Association and formerly a Certified Public Accountant.

He and his wife, Emilie, are both natives of South Florida. They have four children and thirteen grandchildren.
