Info | Hi:
The beginning of my political awareness probably began in college. I attended the University of Buffalo (UB) in New York from 1968 to 1972. This was a period of turmoil on many college campuses throughout the country and UB was no exception. Many times, especially following the shootings on the Kent State campus there were policeman in battle gear patrolling our campus and times of student demonstrations when the police used tear gas. While a sympathetic student to the anti war movement I was not in the mainstream of campus politics and have not had an uncontrollable desire to be, until now. I do feel that the Country is at a crossroads and that it is extremely important for citizens, especially Democrats (since we now have a very limited voice in Congress and the White House) to get involved in National politics. For that reason I am running for Congress in District 3 of Arizona.
I think that one reason that I was not more involved in the political scene at UB, apart from being fairly shy at the time, was that I was an engineering student. I graduated from college with a degree in Civil Engineering. I was soon working for an engineering firm in Syracuse, N. Y. (my hometown is North Syracuse), O’Brien and Gere Engineers, specializing in water systems for communities.
Also at that time I married Pat Beach. We had met and fallen in love in our last year of high school. We have now been married for just over 32 years. We have two great children, Schyler, 17 and Joshua, 24.
O’Brien and Gere was an excellent place to really learn what engineering is all about. In 1978 I founded my own small engineering practice in Syracuse, NY and helped small communities in central and northern New York to find public funding for water distribution, treatment and reclamation facilities for approximately 15 years. We also designed the facilities. I have spent almost my entire career in water resources engineering. Upon coming to Arizona in December, 1993 it was fascinating to see an area where water and its proper management is so critical.
I have enjoyed living and working in Arizona. I began work here at a non-profit organization called the Rural Community Assistance Corporation (RCAC). While it is based in Sacramento, California, it has representatives in 11 states, including Arizona. It is an excellent organization that helps rural communities obtain funding and expertise for water and sanitation facilities. I was the RCAC Environmental representative for Arizona and New Mexico. I worked with many communities including the Navajo Indian Community and Colonias (communities near the Mexican border without water and/or wastewater facilities). This gave me the opportunity to meet some really nice people, to see what the needs are in the State and also to see areas of the state that I had not seen before (such as Gadsden, San Luis, Summerton, Chinle, Quartzite, Tuba City, and Window Rock, among others). Since coming to Arizona my family and I first lived in Scottsdale, and in October, 1995 moved to a house near Tatum Ranch.
I left RCAC to return to design engineering and following some civil engineering work, took a position at Burgess & Niple, Inc. I continued to work with communities, this time mostly in the Valley, on water and water reclamation projects for the next 7 years.
In 2003 an excellent opportunity came along to open and manage an engineering office in Phoenix for Rothberg, Tamburini & Winsor, Inc. This office provides engineering services to communities in Arizona. In 2005 I was elected a Vice President of the firm. I continue to work there.
