| Info | Councilman Sala Udin is a native of Pittsburgh's Hill District. He was first elected to public office on May 16, 1995, in a Special Election for City Council, running against a field of 10 candidates. He was last re-elected to City Council in the General Election of 1997, when he ran unopposed.
Sala Udin brings to City Council an active political background spanning over three decades, beginning with the Civil Rights Movement of the Deep South in the early 1960's, leading right up to today's electoral battlefronts of the 1990's.
Since being elected to City Council, Mr. Udin has distinguished himself as a hard working, effective legislator and a respected leader in the community and on Council:
He was responsible for the establishment and funding of the Disparity Study and Implementation Commission, which he chairs. This commission is establishing the proper guidelines and policies for the inclusion of minority and women contractors in City contracts.
He introduced legislation to establish an independent Citizens Police Review Board. In a referendum on May 20, 1997, Pittsburgh residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of such a review board. Mayor Murphy appointed the Review Board in the winter of 1997.
He was appointed by Mayor Murphy to serve on the Competitive Pittsburgh Task Force, chaired by ALCOA CEO, Paul O'Neil. This task force has recommended a number of options to the City for resolving its budget deficit and generally, to achieve greater efficiency in Pittsburgh's governance.
He was appointed by Mayor Murphy to serve on Pittsburgh's Housing Authority Board, first in 1997, then re-appointed to a four-year term in January 1998. The Board oversees all matters related to public housing in the City. Councilman Udin's district has a sizable portion of all public housing in Pittsburgh.
In addition, Councilman Udin chairs or serves on the Boards of Directors of a number of non-profit and/or service organizations including House of the Crossroads, The Carnegie Library, The Andy Warhol Museum, Three Rivers Arts Festival, Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, Pittsburgh Community Services, Hill Community Development Corporation and the Pittsburgh Convention & Visitors Bureau, to name a few.
The Councilman is the Co-Chair of a task force whose mission is to establish an African American Museum and Cultural Center. Currently, the task force is conducting a feasibility study, which will soon be followed by a detailed business plan and fund raising campaign.
