Finance chairman for Pres. Ford's 1976 campaign.

Leading supporter of Sen. Howard Baker's 1980 campaign for President, then switched to the Bush campaign.

In the Reagan administration, Mosbacher served on the Task Force on Private Sector Initiatives 1981-1983, and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

Mosbacher was disturbed by the anti-gay rhetoric at the Republican National Convention of 1992, since his daughter Diane was a lesbian. [Washington Post, "The Lesbian In The G.O.P. Family," 1992 article] Esquire Magazine reported in 1/2003 that Mosbacher removed Karl Rove from the campaign team in 1992.
