U.S. Senator (D-RI) 1935-1947; was not a candidate for renomination in 1946. Gerry was a conservative, anti-New Deal Democrat. Advocate of a strong Navy.

Married (1) Matilde Townsend; divorced, 1925 (she died in 1949).

Married (2) Edith Stuyvestant, who was the widow of George Vanderbilt and a descendant of Dutch colonial Gov. Peter Stuyvestant.

Resumed the practice of law

Died 10/31/1957 in Providence RI, just a few hours before his younger brother died; interment in St. James Cemetery, Hyde Park, N.Y.
