InfoCraig M. Johnson (D-Port Washington), 33, is currently serving his third term as Nassau County Legislator, following a special election to fill the seat left vacant by the death of his mother, Barbara, from breast cancer in March 2000. He represents the 11th Legislative District, which includes the areas of Albertson, Baxter Estates, East Hills, Flower Hill, Garden City Park, Glenwood Landing, Herricks, Manorhaven, Plandome Manor, Port Washington, Port Washington North, Roslyn, Roslyn Estates, Roslyn Harbor, Roslyn Heights, and Searingtown. Legislator Johnson was re-elected in November 2003 with a total of 8,661 votes, which constituted 71 percent of the vote.

Since the Democrats gained control of the legislature in January of 2000, Legislator Johnson has dedicated himself to restoring the fiscal integrity of Nassau County. His focus on finances has brought dramatic change in the course for the County and his support of a 2004 budget and a four-year plan has been a stabilizing force for Nassau. These changes have not gone unnoticed by some of the most respected independent financial rating agencies in the world, such as Fitch and Moody's, which have both upgraded the County's bond rating in recent months. This " thumbs up" from these institutions means lower interest rates for the county and also sends a clear message by an independent fiscal entity that Nassau County is moving forward again.

He currently serves as the Chairman of the Finance Committee and as a member of the Economic, Development and Labor; Towns, Villages and Cities; Government Services and Operations; and Public Safety committees.

In April 2004, Legislator Johnson sponsored a new local law that protects Nassau County consumers by requiring that tax preparers, which includes individuals or companies, disclose all fees and charges for Refund Anticipation Loans (RAL). The loan interest and fees are charged against the refund to which the consumer is entitled. Johnson sponsored this consumer protection law because he realized that frequently, consumers who utilize these types of tax services, are unaware that they are entitled to their full refund through the IRS or the state, provided they wait the processing period.

A bankruptcy and commercial law attorney, Legislator Johnson recently joined the law firm Jaspan Schlesinger Hoffman LLP where he serves Of Counsel. Johnson previously worked as an associate with Reisman Peirez and Reisman in Garden City. Prior to his association with Reisman Peirez, the legislator worked at the law firm of Willkie Farr & Gallager where he was co-founder of Broader Interest Group, a monthly forum with former Governor Mario Cuomo, where attorneys and non-legal staff discuss issues of public concern. The group is also active in the "Constitution Works," a non-profit organization in which attorneys teach constitutional law to inner-city high school students. He brings a wealth of experience to his position as county legislator.

Prior to his own election to the legislature, Johnson served as his mother's political advisor and consultant for more than five years and through three successful campaigns. Through his close relationship and involvement with his mother's political career, he became familiar with the issues, needs and concerns of the residents in his district. Johnson was raised in Port Washington and attended public schools in the Port Washington school system. He earned his BA, magna cum laude, from Amherst College and received his Juris Doctor degree from St. John's University, where he graduated in the top seven percent of his class.

Legislator Johnson lives in Port Washington with his wife Liz and two sons, Benjamin and Samuel. He is a member of the Port Washington Kiwanis Club and serves on the Board of Directors of the National Jewish Democratic Council.
