Info | Daughter-in-law of longtime Columbus School Board member Loretta Heard.
A drive to be involved in the development and prosperity of her community is the primary force motivating Tracy Heard to seek election to the Ohio House of Representatives.
Heard, 43, is the Democratic candidate for the representative seat in Ohio House District 26.
She defeated incumbent Rep. Mike Mitchell and challenger Clarence Glover in the May primary to win the right to run against Republican Michael Elicson this November. Elicson's primary was uncontested.
Currently a noncompliance auditor for Banc of America Practice Solutions, Heard has lived in the district for seven years.
She is married and has no children.
"Initially, I decided to run because District 26...has a very engaged and involved constituency, and we're used to having the same kind of representation," Heard said. "It just seemed that when Mike (Mitchell) stepped in, there was a void; we weren't seeing him at meetings and events."
Heard said she is known for being involved throughout the community, and that is what she believes was the foundation of her success in the Democratic primary, in which she took 51 percent of the vote.
One of Heard's biggest roles in her community involvement was serving as executive director of the Livingston Avenue Collaborative for Community Development, a partnership formed to improve the social, physical and economic conditions in the area along and surrounding Livingston Avenue.
The promotion of economic development, housing, human services and safety are the collaborative's key goals, she said.
As director of the collaborative, Heard worked on 911 calls, programs at Heyl and Kent elementary schools and a safety patrol that focused on crime and the safety of residences.
Heard has also worked in corporate capacities and as an entrepreneur.
"I bring a vast amount of experience that's...applicable to this position," she said.
Heard also brings a personal connection to her bid for public office: She is the daughter-in-law longtime Columbus Board of Education member Loretta Heard.
Though she said she is sad her mother-in-law is not here to see her run -- she died in 2005 -- Heard said Loretta knew she had her sights set on public office and had the commitment to work.
"It's something that you really believe in if you're being a public servant, as opposed to being a politician," she said.
She said residents of the district know her integrity and character, and that is what makes her an ideal choice for an Ohio House representative.
"I've already shown that I am committed, that I am dedicated, that I can do the work and I will do the work," she said.
