Info | HOVEY, Alvin Peterson, a Representative from Indiana; born near Mount Vernon, Posey County, Ind., September 6, 1821; attended the common schools of Mount Vernon; studied law; was admitted to the bar September 25, 1842, and practiced; commissioned first lieutenant in June 1846 for service in the war with Mexico; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1850; circuit judge 1851-1854; judge of the supreme court in 1854; district attorney of the United States in 1856; removed by President Buchanan in 1858; commissioned colonel of the Twenty-fourth Regiment, Indiana Volunteers, July 31, 1861; brigadier general of Volunteers April 28, 1862; brevetted major general of Volunteers July 4, 1864; commissioned United States Minister to the Republic of Peru in 1865; resigned in 1870; elected as a Republican to the Fiftieth Congress and served from March 4, 1887, until January 17, 1889, when he resigned; elected Governor in 1888; inaugurated in January 1889 and served until his death in Indianapolis, Ind., November 23, 1891; interment in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
