If there is any book you should purchase about Hawai'i, its history and political fabric, this should be it. This book details a time when America turned its back on its ideals of liberty and freedom from tyranny to promote something President McKinley called "manifest destiny" - the illegal subjugation of an entire independent, sovereign nation. America became a tyrant.

Hawai'i's history is one of great tragedy when in January 1893, American businessmen with the intentions of protecting its profits deposed the peaceful ruling Queen of the Kingdom of Hawai'i. Plantation owners and wealthy merchants manipulated Congress and betrayed Liliuokalani. American troops marched towards the palace heavily armed as if charging through war and they arrested the Queen as the American businessmen declared the Kingdom dissolved, establishing an independent Republic of Hawai'i, ruled only by the elite waiting for American annexation.

Queen Liliuokalani, determined that no one shed any blood on either side, stepped down and issued a statement:

"I Liliuokalani, by the Grace of God and under the Constitution of the Hawai'ian Kingdom, Queen, do hereby solemnly protest against any and all acts done against myself and the Constitutional Government of the Hawai'ian Kingdom by certain persons claiming to have established a Provisional Government of and for this Kingdom. That I yield to the superior force of the United States of America whose Minister Plenipotentiary, His Excellency John L. Stevens, has caused United States troops to be landed in Honolulu and declared that he would support the Provisional Government. Now to avoid any collision of armed forces, and perhaps the loss of life, I do this under protest and impelled by said force yield my authority until such time as the Government of the United States shall, upon facts being presented to it, undo the action of its representatives and reinstate me in the authority which I claim as the Constitutional Sovereign of the Hawai'ian Islands."

In 1993, Congress passed Joint Resolution 19, an official acknowledgement and apology of the United States for its illegal overthrow of a soverign ally nation. [Link]

The first thought that comes to mind when you and I hear the word "Hawai'i" is of sun, beaches and surf. But there is a great deal of pain and suffering with the memory of the injustice done to the Queen and the original citizens of the Kingdom of Hawai'i. Their nation and their beloved leader was stolen from them - victims of American greed and politics.
